Show and Tell Your Message
 You need text. Search engines read it. Even some
of us humans like to read. But recognize the sad truth that many busy visitors
either don't read very well or are too impatient to bother. Your pages should
tell their story in images and in text. When a visitor lands on your home
page, you have only a few seconds to convince her that this is the
spot. If you fail at that critical task, the back button is only a
mouse-click away and odds are strong your visitor will be gone, never to
return.
If you sell hamburgers, show your visitors a picture
of a juicy, sizzling burger right on your first page. Better still show the
burger and also show some people obviously enjoying chowing down.
Just as a good book needs a great cover and engaging
first line to bring you into its story, so does a Web site. There's no place
on the Web for "It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly a shot rang out."
Unless, of course, your site is a send-up of cliche writing. Engage your
readers visually and textually right from the moment they arrive. That's
not rocket science. It's simple grade-school show-and-tell and it still
works.
